    Grade 440C stainless steel is a high-carbon, martensitic stainless steel known for its superior strength, hardness, and wear resistance. With moderate corrosion resistance, it stands out among stainless alloys for its exceptional performance after heat treatment. The high carbon content imparts these remarkable properties, making 440C ideal for demanding applications such as ball bearings and valve parts. Its ability to achieve the highest strength, hardness, and wear resistance of all stainless steels makes it a top choice for industries requiring durable and reliable materials.

    Features of 440 Stainless Steel Coil

    CORROSION RESISTANCE:
    Good resistance to atmosphere, fresh water, food, alkali and weak acid. Best resistance in hardened and tempered and passivated condition. Smooth polished surface also helps. Corrosion resistance of grade 440C approaches that of grade 304 in many environments.

    HEAT RESISTANCE:
    Use at temperatures above the appropriate tempering temperature is not recommended, as excessive tempering reduces mechanical properties.

    HEAT TREATMENT:
    Annealing - full annealing - 850-900°C, slow furnace cooling to about 600°C and subsequent cooling in air. Subcritical annealing - 735 - 785°C and slow furnace cooling.

    Hardening - heating to 1010-1065 °C followed by quenching in hot oil or in air. In case of heavy profiles, quenching in oil is necessary. Immediate tempering at 150-370°C gives a wide range of hardness values and mechanical properties as shown in the attached table.

    Tempering in the range 425-565°C should be avoided due to reduced impact and corrosion resistance. Tempering in the range of 590-675°C results in lower hardness (the product becomes machinable) and high impact resistance.

    WELDING:
    If welding is required, preheat at 250 °C and complete annealing after welding. 420 filler metal will produce a weld with high hardness (although not as high as 440C), while 309 or 310 will produce a soft weld with higher ductility.
