439 Stainless Steel Coil
What is 439 Stainless Steel?
439 stainless steel is a titanium-stabilized ferritic alloy, recognized for its up to 1.10% titanium content, which significantly boosts its defense against intergranular corrosion. This steel was first introduced in the 1950s, initially aimed at direct-fired water heater tanks, but its applications have broadened considerably, notably in the EU, due to its outstanding weldability and robust resistance to stress corrosion cracking.
Featuring a chromium content of 17% to 19%, 439 stainless steel provides strong corrosion resistance, capable of withstanding a range of oxidizing conditions from regular tap water to intense boiling acids. It’s especially commendable for its resistance to chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking. The alloy’s excellent weldability is a key advantage, allowing it to maintain its ductility and resist intergranular corrosion effectively, thereby eliminating the requirement for post-weld annealing treatments.
Features of 439 Stainless Steel
439 stainless steel contains appropriate amounts of chromium, molybdenum, titanium and other alloying elements. Chromium forms a dense and stable oxide layer (chromium oxide layer) on the stainless steel surface, preventing further oxidation reactions and metal corrosion. Although the molybdenum content in 439 stainless steel is relatively low, the addition of molybdenum can improve the corrosion resistance and high temperature resistance of stainless steel.
439 stainless steel can be solution annealed, that is, it is heated to high temperatures (usually between 850°C and 950°C) to dissolve carbides, sulfides and other grain boundary phases in the stainless steel, and then quickly cooled. This treatment improves the corrosion resistance and mechanical properties of stainless steel.

5. What is the difference between stainless steel 439 and 304?
The key differences between 439 and 304L stainless steel rest in their chemical composition, corrosion resistance, thermal stability, and cost-effectiveness. 439 stainless steel, with its 16-18% chromium and 0.5-1.5% titanium content, is engineered to offer improved corrosion resistance, attributing to its elevated chromium levels. This contrasts with 304L, which typically contains 18-20% chromium and 8-10.5% nickel, enhancing its overall corrosion resistance and making it a staple in diverse applications.
Although both grades boast commendable corrosion resistance, the heightened chromium in 439 provides it with enhanced durability in high-temperature environments, ideal for automotive exhaust systems and other applications where heat resistance is paramount. From a cost perspective, 439 stainless steel generally presents a higher investment due to its specialized composition and the benefits it delivers, particularly in terms of heat tolerance, positioning it as a premium alternative to the versatile and widely utilized 304L stainless steel.
6. What is the difference between aisi 439 vs 409?
The primary differences between 439 and 409 stainless steels lie in their chemical composition, corrosion resistance, and thermal capabilities. 439 stainless steel, with its 16-18% chromium content and 0.5-1.5% titanium, is engineered for enhanced corrosion resistance and is particularly adept at handling higher temperature applications. This makes it a versatile choice for environments requiring both durability and heat resistance.
On the other hand, 409 stainless steel, typically featuring a slightly lower chromium level and lacking titanium, provides adequate corrosion and heat resistance but doesn't match the heightened performance of 439. Although both are popular in automotive exhaust systems, 439 stands out for its superior corrosion resistance, especially in high-temperature and oxidizing conditions. Consequently, while 439 may come at a higher cost, its advanced properties make it the preferred option in applications where higher corrosion resistance and temperature endurance are critical. Meanwhile, 409 remains a cost-effective solution for situations where environmental conditions are less severe and budget constraints are a significant consideration.
