What is 253MA Stainless Steel Sheet?
253MA is a grade that combines excellent high-temperature service properties with ease of fabrication. It resists oxidation at temperatures up to 1150°C and outperforms Grade 310 in atmospheres containing carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur.
253MA has a relatively low nickel content, providing an advantage in reducing sulfide atmospheres compared to high-nickel alloys and Grade 310. Its high levels of chromium, silicon, nitrogen, and cerium contribute to good oxide stability, high elevated temperature creep strength, and excellent resistance to sigma phase precipitation.
The austenitic structure of this grade ensures excellent toughness, even at cryogenic temperatures.

Corrosion Resistance: Although not specifically designed for aqueous corrosion resistance, the high chromium and nitrogen content provides 253MA with pitting resistance comparable to that of 316. However, its high carbon content makes it highly susceptible to sensitization, potentially reducing its aqueous corrosion resistance after high-temperature service or fabrication.
Heat Resistance:
Oxidation - It exhibits excellent resistance to air at temperatures up to 1100°C. At high temperatures, the steel rapidly forms a thin, highly adherent, and elastic oxide layer. This oxide provides superior protection, even under cyclic conditions, outperforming Grade 310. The best resistance is achieved under non-cycling conditions.
Carburisation - This grade performs well under oxidizing conditions, but alloys with higher nickel content are preferred for use in reducing atmospheres.
Sulphidation - It offers good resistance to sulfur-bearing gases in an oxidizing atmosphere, even with only trace amounts of oxygen present. However, reducing gases prevent the formation of the protective oxide layer. Due to its high strength at elevated temperatures, 253MA is frequently used for structural and pressure-containing applications at temperatures ranging from above 500°C to around 900°C.
253MA becomes sensitized in the temperature range of 425-860°C. While this is not an issue for high-temperature applications, it does result in reduced aqueous corrosion resistance.
