What is 253MA Stainless Steel Coil?
Stainless steel 253MA is an austenitic material known for its excellent strength and oxidation resistance at temperatures up to 2000°F. It effectively withstands high heat. The combination of carbon, nitrogen, and dispersed rare earth and alkali metal oxides provides it with excellent creep strength. SS 253MA is specifically designed for use at temperatures above 550°C. Consequently, 253MA sheets and plates are ideal for applications in the temperature range of 850-1100°C.

Corrosion Resistance:
While not specifically designed for aqueous corrosion resistance, the high chromium and nitrogen content provide 253MA with pitting resistance comparable to that of 316. However, its high carbon content makes it susceptible to sensitization, potentially reducing its aqueous corrosion resistance after high-temperature service or fabrication.
Heat Resistance:
Oxidation: 253MA exhibits excellent resistance to air up to temperatures of 1100°C. At elevated temperatures, the steel rapidly forms a thin, highly adherent, and elastic oxide layer. This oxide layer offers superior protection, even under cyclic conditions, surpassing the performance of Grade 310. Optimal resistance is achieved under non-cyclic conditions.
Carburization: This grade performs well under oxidizing conditions. However, alloys with higher nickel content are preferred for applications in reducing atmospheres.
Sulfidation: It provides good resistance to sulfur-bearing gases in an oxidizing atmosphere, even with trace amounts of oxygen. However, reducing gases hinder the formation of the protective oxide layer.
253MA's high strength at elevated temperatures makes it well-suited for structural and pressure-containing applications, typically operating between temperatures above 500°C and around 900°C.
253MA can become sensitized within the temperature range of 425-860°C. While this isn't problematic for high-temperature applications, it can lead to reduced aqueous corrosion resistance.
